Management effectiveness
Feedback that actually helps
Useful feedback is specific, timely, and offered with the intention of helping someone succeed.
Most people want to know how they are doing. Most managers find giving feedback uncomfortable. The result is often too little feedback, delivered too late.
Be specific
Describe the behaviour and its effect rather than offering general judgments. Specific feedback is easier to understand and act on.
Be timely
Feedback is most useful close to the moment it relates to, while the situation is still fresh.
Make it a conversation
Ask for the other person's perspective and agree together on next steps. Feedback works best as a dialogue.
